“There is nothing more vulnerable than creativity.”
– Brene Brown
We have so many excuses for not being creative, or trying new things, or following our passions. We don’t have enough time. We are scared of judgment. We’re not “good” at it. It’s not making us money. The list goes on and on.
Creativity is our expression of the divine within us. It is Source/Universe/God working through us. When we stop creating, we lose our inspired movement of life force energy.
Hot Take: EVERYONE can sing. EVERYONE can dance. EVERYONE can paint. EVERYONE can write. We just think it has to look or be a certain way or evoke certain feelings in ourselves or someone else, or be approved of, or be “perfect” to do it at all, and that is just not true.
Yes, we will have mediums we are more drawn to or enjoy more than others, and that is the whispering of the divine, the ultimate muse, communicating with us.
I heard once that if you don’t act on your creative urges, that inspiration and muse will eventually move to someone else so it can be expressed through them. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing as we are all creating from a collective consciousness and your inspiration could very well fuel that act of creation somewhere else and that is just fine!
For example, have you ever had a thought to write a book about something very specific and then you see a book published with a very similar plot later? Or a business idea? A song melody? Chances are that you entertaining the idea, even for a moment, helped bring it into fruition in the world elsewhere, and that is beautiful.
So many times I have heard people say “Oh, i’m just not creative.” I have even been TOLD MYSELF “Oh, Bri’s not creative.” (um excuse me? lol).
Creativity doesn’t just mean making a pot out of clay or wearing a beret and a paint-splattered smock. It can also be in the way you curate your home, the way you bake a focaccia, the yoga flow you sequence, the games you play with your children, the DIY wreath you make each season, the unique outfits you put together, and garden you tend to behind your home.
Creativity has many different avenues and we must not limit ourselves by thinking we aren’t creative if we aren’t selling earrings at the local farmer’s market.
Ask yourself:
- How am I creative? What do I do everyday that is an expression of my divine creativity?
- What did I used to do as a child to be creative that I haven’t done in a long time?
- What are some creative projects I’ve always wanted to try or have been meaning to do but am putting off for some reason?
Action Item:
- BE CREATIVE. Dedicate even 20 minutes or an hour to really letting your creative juices flow.
If you can make the time and budget to gather supplies to inspire you to create more in the new year, do that too.
If nothing else, put on some good music and sing and dance your heart out. Let those creative juices flow!
