“You gotta walk in rooms like God sent you…”
Let’s begin by immediately recognizing that the word or topic of “God” can be triggering. I still very rarely use the word God, although it has found its way back into my vocabulary as I become more comfortable with the fact that I am safe and secure in my spiritual path. So please, use whatever term you’d prefer. Universe/Source/Spirit/Goddess/Divine Love, whatever resonates with you, go with that.
I grew up in a Christian Homeschooling community and I have come to terms with the fact that I have religious trauma. In public highschool and then college, I slowly went the other way for a bit and considered myself more of an atheist or at most critical agnostic. As I deconstructed, found yoga, and delved into other spiritual resources such as books, podcasts, etc. I have found a deeply fulfilling spiritual path that is my OWN and resonates with me. I now greatly value understanding different parts of the spectrum so I know now what it feels like to walk my OWN soul’s path that is completely unique to me.
I don’t fault anyone who is benefitting from religion or feels it is aligned for them. I think church and spiritual community can be incredibly wonderful places and experiences for lots of people. If you are part of a church or religious organization, that’s GREAT as long as you:
- Are not believing your religion is right for everyone and everyone else’s religion is wrong
- Are not condemning, judging, or using your religion in a divisive, hateful or CONTROLLING way
- Know that you are free to change your mind and choose a different path at any moment, free to express your connection to the divine in your own way, and that church, scripture, whatever else comes along with your religion is there to support you in your own individual connection to God.
Ensure you are keenly aware that your spiritual path is only between you and the divine and you need to make decisions that will propel YOUR soul forward.
All of that being said, we are all spiritual beings whether we believe we are or not! Bible-thumpers and atheists and monks alike, we are ALL spiritual beings. We have a spirit and we are on our own spiritual paths even if we aren’t consciously aware of that.
I have had a few moments of spiritual awakening such as:
- When I truly realized that we are all one. I had heard it before but never actually realized it until one specific moment. We are connected to and a part of everyone around us. I grew up hearing about separation and being “not of the world”, etc. and I get it but…as humans we are all one. End of story.
- When I realized that Jesus was right and Buddha was right and a few other leaders were right and they were enlightened, but then people followed them and people followed the people and the message got lost. Then instead of everyone realizing that every person could access the divine and find this connection, they just created religion and their messages got all warped as they began to use the teachings for money, control, and power instead of spreading light and love.
- When I realized that everything that has happened and will happen to me is happening FOR me, not TO me, no matter how hard or painful the experience is. It is my soul’s path to walk to learn the lessons I need to learn. Again, not excusing abuse, oppression, hateful acts, etc. I do not believe that everything happens for a reason but I do think that we can USE any situation to deepen our spiritual connection and to learn.
Today’s post feels a bit messy and charged, and I think that is okay.
Sometimes our spiritual path is just to reconnect to our own spirit and get to know ourselves as deeply as possible. Find your own spiritual path. Or don’t. Do what you feel called to do and know you can (and should) change your mind and grow and evolve and learn and ALL OF IT is okay.
Maybe your spiritual path is to just love everyone as much as you can. Maybe your soul’s expression is to save as many dogs as you can or plant a community garden or experience tantric sex or open a badass nail studio or hike your nearby mountain or create beautiful collages or teach kindergarteners. Maybe it’s to be a MOM. Maybe it’s to be a badass single business owner your whole life! Maybe it’s to travel the world. Maybe it’s to live off the grid.
The point is NO ONE KNOWS except you what is right for you, how you connect to source energy, or what spirituality means to you.
You are worthy of healing from religious trauma if you have it.
You are worthy of being a part of a church or religion if you want to.
You are worthy of changing your mind and evolving.
You are worthy of direct connection to your team of guides, ancestors, angels, etc.
You are worthy of direct connection to Universe/Source/Spirit/God/Divine Love.
You are worthy. (:
Ask Yourself:
- Do I have a charged reaction to talking about spirituality?
- What are my beliefs around spirituality, and how have they changed?
Action Step:
Connect to Divine Love in the way that works for YOU. If you are not into spirituality at all, connect to your own spirit or soul.
